Lauren Squires (Director) is a lifelong tap dancer, performer, and educator. She is a professor in the English department at Ohio State, but has always devoted time to performing and teaching tap. She grew up dancing in Springfield, MO, where she performed as part of the Sonshine Dance Company for 8 years, including dancing in shows in Branson. During college at American University, she was a founding member of Tappening (Washington, DC). While obtaining her PhD in Linguistics at University of Michigan, she performed with Sole Full of Rhythm (Ann Arbor, MI). She has taught teen and adult tap through several studios and recreational programs in Washington, DC; Charlottesville, VA; Wilmington, NC; and Columbus, OH. At OSU, she is the faculty advisor for Buckeyes on Tap. She founded Movement Afoot in 2013, hoping to help nurture a tap dance community in Columbus, and because tap dancing makes her really happy. She lives in the University District with her partner, their toddler, two cats, and too many musical instruments.
Janet Schroeder (Assistant Director) is a percussive dance artist, scholar, and teacher, with a particular interest in tap dance, Appalachian clogging, and body percussion. She maintains her physical practice of these rhythmic dance forms throughout the U.S. and Mexico, creating and presenting choreography as well as taking and teaching classes. From 2005-2010 Schroeder toured with music and dance company Rhythm in Shoes. She holds a BFA in musical theatre from Ohio Northern University, an MFA in dance from The College at Brockport, SUNY, and is currently in the doctoral program in dance studies at The Ohio State University. Janet has been performing with Movement Afoot since 2014.
Rachel Cooke has been tap dancing since she was three years old! She grew up dancing at Arlene Cassara Dance and Theatre Center near Cleveland, Ohio. She moved to Columbus to attend The Ohio State University where she became Vice President of Buckeyes On Tap. Rachel is a recent graduate and has returned OSU to complete her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. She also enjoys hiking, biking, and knitting. Rachel has been performing with Movement Afoot since 2015.
Amber Geiser is a native of Marion, Ohio and now resides in Hilliard with her husband and two children. Amber began tap dancing at the age of two and has continued to grow in the art as a student, performer and teacher; she trained at Joanne’s School of Dance and Pinnell Dance Centre and has won several regional and National dance titles. Amber is a 2002 graduate of Kent State University, holding a BS in Secondary Education. While at college, Amber joined a local tap group at KSU and taught dance at The Dance Factory in Caledonia, Ohio. After graduation, Amber taught English for Marion City Schools and continued to teach and choreograph. After returning to Columbus, she was a member of the Columbus Tap Project and danced in “Tappy Holidays” performing in Columbus, Cleveland and New York City. Amber was also an instructor for Dublin Dance Centre and Gymnastics from 2007-2012. Currently, Amber is a dance teacher for Powell Dance Academy and is the Tap competition team choreographer; she is also a choreographer for Columbus’ Vaud Villities, the nation’s longest running music and dance show. Amber joined Movement Afoot in 2016.
Stephanie Gluck, born and raised in Worthington, Ohio, has been dancing since the age of four. She began her training at Columbus Youth Ballet and continued onto Dublin Dance Centre & Gymnastics where she fell in love with Tap. Stephanie has been teaching tap and hoop dance at Dublin Dance Centre since 2012. She is currently the Tap Company Director for DDC’s pre-professional students. While she is not dancing, Stephanie works full time at The Ohio State University. In her rare free time, Stephanie enjoys playing the piano, playing board games with friends, and spending way too much time on Netflix. Stephanie joined Movement Afoot in 2017.
Holly Honroth is originally from Strongsville, Ohio and was first introduced to the world of tap at Dance Dimensions by Jen Naso nearly 20 years ago. Continuing to dance through college, Holly was a member of the Shakerettes at Miami University for four years. After a short hiatus from dance following graduation, Holly was able to rekindle her love of tap through adult tap classes at Artisan Dance Studio after her move to Columbus. Holly is currently a full-time MBA student at The Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University. Holly has been performing with Movement Afoot since 2015.
Janelle Maur, originally from Akron, Ohio, trained at the Christine Jones-Meneer School of Dance with a particular focus in tap, for 14 years. After a move to central Ohio to attend Otterbein University, and a six-year hiatus from dance, she returned to the art form in 2014 at Artisan Dance Studio where she is a member of the Artisan Ballet Company. Janelle currently works in Development at the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) and resides in Clintonville with her husband, Ian. She’s a pop-culture junkie and enjoys playing piano, and of course, bringing tap dance to the masses. Janelle has been performing with Movement Afoot since 2015.
Sharon Ross grew up tap dancing at the JTM Studio of Performing Arts (now Amy’s Studio of Performing Arts) in Dallas, Texas. Most recently before coming to Columbus and joining Movement Afoot, Sharon studied tap with Gregg Geoffroy at the Berkeley Beat in Berkeley, California. During the school year, Sharon is a linguistics instructor and a STEP mentor at OSU. A lifelong summer camp enthusiast, Sharon spends her summers working in summer camp leadership. Sharon has been performing with Movement Afoot since 2015.
